The modest chapel of Panagia Faneromeni, which formerly served as the community’s church. Built near Platres, it now operates twice a year, on September 8 and Diakainisimo’s Friday.
In 1940, construction began on the ruins of an ancient monastery. In 1975, the sanctuary was completed.
It is dedicated to Panagia the Iamatiki (She who heals), but became known as the chapel of Panagia Samatziotissa due to its location in ‘Samatzia’ near the Forrest Park Hotel.
Services are held in the chapel on Shrove Tuesday and August 31.
Between Platres and Kato Platres, the sanctuary of Panagia Faneromeni was the first church in Platres. In 1880, a newer chapel with the same name was constructed closer to Platres.
This church was demolished and a new, larger and magnificent church was constructed in its place at the expense of the benefactor Phrixos I. Dimitrios.
Its opening took place in 1973. It is an architecturally and aesthetically stunning temple that serves as a crown ornament for the Platres community and is a popular tourist attraction.
The Agios Nikolaos Chapel was constructed in 1995. It was constructed on the same site as the ruins of an ancient monastery. The residents of the village operated the small Agios Nikolaos chapel located there until 1930 on an annual basis.
Currently, services are conducted on December 6 and the Sunday of Thomas.
In Platres, there are both churches and village chapels. The elder residents recall with affection the village’s churches being packed on Sundays, festivals, and especially during Holy Week.
